Wherein we tell Steve what's going on back home, thereby either making him homesick or sending him on another 6 month tour...

LAVA Softball (ESADASA) will begin its season on April 12 at 7:45 at Hensley field in Alexandria. The moth-eaten troops will attempt to have two practices before that date (with most players wishing for rain-outs, of course.)

In keeping with tradition, LAVA Softball (ESADASA) was rained out on a sunny day on April 12 and will begin its season on April 19 at 6:30 PM at Hensley field in Alexandria. Since the temperature has dropped back into winter ranges, we're counting on snow....

May 13 Update

Through a slew of early games, LAVA Softball sports a 4-1 record as of May 16, with the one-run loss coming at the hands (bats) of the old Ramparts team in the last inning.
Ernie's boss is going to partially sponsor us and also buy us new shirts so we can be walking billboards -- yeah, BVB Advertising.

LAVA co-ed "A" volleyball continued its decline and didn't even make the playoffs this season. We can blame it all on John K., who has been hurt and on crutches for the last several weeks with a torn calf muscle.

The women's Fairfax County volleyball team Ladies Night Out, which included Peggy, Lauren, Amy, Karen, Judy and Stacey, finished third (we think) in a somewhat skewed division. 3 teams quite a bit above .500 and 3 teams below. We'll miss Judy, who's moving to Hudson, OH at the end of May.

June 5 Update

LAVA/ESADASA/BVB softball was on a roll, with 5 straight wins, and a 7-1 record, when a rain-out (one of those rain in the morning -- beautiful evening -- tell me again why aren't we playing -- type rain-outs) stopped our momentum, although the team is 7-2 with only 3 games remaining, which still gives us a shot at the playoffs so we can lose in the first round.

The team was plagued with injuries early in the season, the strangest of which was Peggy's perforated intestine, which had nothing to do with softball really except it decided to happen during a game. She's continuing to improve after emergency surgery, a week in the hospital and some mother's lovin' at her parents' house.

Not much happening in the way of outdoor volleyball at Hunting Towers, due to injuries and a series of rainy weekends.

Beth, Lamar, Mike and Lauren started prepping for the FootWedge with a round of golf on Memorial Day at Twin Lakes -- the scores really started improving after they decided to have a post-golf wingfest at Hooters.

Jeff, Beth, Lamar, Laura S. and Lauren did the Race for the Cure on June 2, Jeff & Lamar running with the rest of us following along more sedately. The post-race meal at the Vienna Inn was enhanced by Beth opening her birthday packages to find Hooter's shirts!

Everyone's enjoying the postcards and other missives from our fearless traveler!

July 1 Update

LAVA/ESADASA/BVB softball ended the season 8-4, well above our usual .500 average, and are in contention for the playoffs (they take the top 8 teams out of 18). Our final weeks included a clubbing of the first place (previously undefeated) team at Minnie Howard, and being crushed by the two 2nd place teams. Took team pictures to send to our sponsor at last Thursday's game, so maybe we'll get a few up here as well.

Pretty quiet on the homefront otherwise, as many people are taking time off for vacations due to the July 4th holiday.

August 27 Update

What?!!!??Summer's almost over and we've hardly played volleyball??? Due to injuries, inclement weather and scheduling conflicts, the LAVA crowd has had relatively few visits to the field at Hunting Towers (which hasn't been torn down....yet... although the East Building is practically empty).

And, somewhere along the way ESADASA lost our first and only softball playoff game, after beating the field into submission, but you could have printed that headline before the game.

Sportsplex, in it's infinite wisdom, started the indoor leagues the week of August 13 -- 3 weeks earlier than usual. By some fluke, the LAVA CoEd A team slipped in under the wire and are 1-2 after a bye the first week and a 9 PM Friday night game last week (without Phil, Beth, Lamar or Ron -- thanks, Keith!). Mutley Crew didn't get registered for this league, but have no fear.... the next season starts in the middle of October.

Plans are being made for the FootWedge on October 6 and a possible Velveeta Invitational in September or October, if Ron and John don't stay at the beach forever.

The LAVALuau Olympics have been rescheduled for June 2002 due to Jeff having to be out of town on August 18 ---- what, you mean he wasn't out of town that weekend...?
